First Editions Club FAQ

Common questions about Lemuria's First Editions Club.

Why would I want to join Lemuria's First Edition Club?

There is no easier way to start building a respectable library of modern first editions - we deliver them right to your doorstep. Some of our selected books have become immediately collectible. For example, in June 1997 we chose then-unknown Charles Frazier's first book, Cold Mountain, as our monthly selection. He was plucked from anonymity when he won the National Book Award that year. The current market value of a signed first edition of that book now hovers around $300. What's more, you will have the chance to be among the first readers to discover new writers like Tom Franklin, William Gay, and Kent Haruf, as well as stocking your bookshelves with modern literary mainstays such as Richard Ford, Pat Conroy, and Ellen Gilchrist.

What is a first edition?

Book readers sometimes become interested in collecting when books become important objects that they wish to own, admire and preserve. These bibliophiles develop a passion for an author's work or subject area, wishing to create a fine and complete collection of work. To dealers and collectors, the first edition is the most desirable and valuable edition.A first edition is the first printing of a book. First editions are distinguished from subsequent printings as they represent the closest edition in time and intent to the author's original work. Identification of firsts can vary greatly among publishers. A signed first edition can become a special and valuable book for the owner.

What is the First Editions Club?

We deliver a signed first edition (occasionally two) every month to your doorstep. The selections are predominately fiction (mix of contemporary literature, Southern fiction and mystery) and chosen based on literary content and potential future collectability. This may mean choosing an established author or singling out a new writer for our support. To better understand the nature of the First Editions Club selections, please view our list of previous selections.

How much does it cost to join?

There is no cost to join and your credit card is charged only at the time the monthly FEC selection is shipped to you. All you pay is the publisher's retail price of book plus a $8 shipping charge.

What if I don't like the book that is selected?

You are always welcome to return a selection within two weeks. We just ask that you give us prior notification.
