Description
Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press (October 2016)
First Edition. Hardback.
As new in dust jacket.
“They was devils a-walkin' the earth a-seeking what they could devour” is how one newly freed slave in Natchez, Mississippi described the Klansman he encountered during Reconstruction.
Nearly one-hundred years later, blacks living in the same region faced an equally terrifying and murderous Klan, when the group re-emerged to battle the civil rights movement. The Klan was especially active in the northeastern area of Concordia Parrish, Louisiana adjacent to the Mississippi River. There numerous unsolved murders in the 1960s pointed to Klansman as suspects.
Over the past decade, Stanley Nelson, editor of The Concordia Sentinel, has researched these longstanding cold cases and shed new light on those responsible.
Devils a-Walkin
is the result of his investigation and offers a book-length narrative about this history of Klan violence in Louisiana.
