Description

New York, NY: Random House (1928)

One of 1470 numbered copies printed in black and white and signed by Kent. This copy shows some wear to the corners and spine and fading. The pages are still white and bright and the binding is secure.

This was the first book published by Random House and and shows the original Random House colophon designed by Kent in Bennett Cerf's office on the spot:

“One day Rockwell dropped in at our office . . . when I suddenly got an inspiration and said 'I've got the name for our publishing house. We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random. Let's call it Random House.'”

“Donald liked it, and Rockwell Kent said, 'That's a great name. I'll draw your trademark.' So, sitting at my desk, he took a piece of paper and in five minutes drew Random House, which has been our colophon ever since.” (from At Random by Bennett Cerf)
